Stefano Di Stasio (b. 1948 Naples, lives and works in Rome), is one of the leading proponents of a movement that, in the early 1980s, advocated a return to “classical” painting from a postmodern perspective. Variously labelled as Hypermannerism, Anachronism, New Manner, the movement had Italy as its epicentre and was the result of an urge to return to figuration after decades of the artworld being focussed on aniconic experimentation, and of painting being declared a “dead language”.
